You should probably be asking yourself why I choose a freshly renovated room of a house as the featured picture of this article. I chose this picture as for me, choosing a theme for your WordPress site is like refurbishing a property: you don’t change the function of the property (it’s still the same room or the same house), but you change it’s aspect so it looks more inviting.
Just as real estate moguls use the exact same kind of refurbishment process for all their properties (same paint, same flooring, etc), I use the same theme for all my websites: Enfold. In this article, I will tell you all about my favorite theme, and also share with you why I think you should always use a premium theme for your WordPress sites, how to look for one, and why you should use the same theme for all your sites. Let’s dive in!
Why You Should Use a Premium WordPress Theme
When you are setting up a new WordPress site, you get by default the WordPress official theme of the year. This theme made a lot of improvements since I first used WordPress, but it’s still quite … unexciting. By using the default WordPress theme, you put yourself at the same level of all the people that just create a WordPress blog for fun, and it’s not professional at all.
You also have the choice of getting a free WordPress theme, accessible from the themes explorer which you can find within WordPress. You can get a great looking free theme, but the problem here is that you never know if the developer behind the theme will continue to support it in the future.
Premium themes solve all those problems. They are usually great looking, highly customisable, and have a solid team of developers behind them for the most popular premium themes.
Premium themes also comes with a lot of functionalities that have nothing to do with the appearance. For example, the theme called Enfold that I am using on all my sites comes with a very neat way to graphically create pages:
For example, I create all my landing pages with this tool, without typing a single line of code. The theme also allow you to easily insert buttons to share articles on social media, design your home page, and much more.
Looking for the Perfect Theme
When I started my first profitable website, Open Home Automation, I had the problem as well: which theme should I use? As I had no money and also no experience at all with WordPress, I used the web to look for a free WordPress theme that would suit my site. This is how it looked like at the time, I will let you judge by yourself:
Pretty clean actually, but not that professional looking. I looked for a long time for the perfect free theme before even looking at premium themes. The problem that I usually had is that my websites were breaking whenever there was a major WordPress update & the theme developer could not follow. I also lost of lot of time in the process, spending hours to look for new free themes on specialised websites, and also of trying to repair the issues with the free themes I had chosen.
Then, I discovered the ThemeForest website, and the Enfold theme. It was then the #2 best selling theme on the platform, and I immediately liked it. This is how this same Open Home Automation website looks now:
As you can see, it’s much cleaner, more colourful, and better organised on the page. It is also a responsive theme, which is very useful nowadays as many people are using their mobile devices to browse the web. Google even started to penalise websites that don’t have a mobile version or are not responsive.
Why I Use Enfold on All My Sites
As I started to use Enfold on my site Open Home Automation, I understood that it could be used on more than just one site. The theme was easily customisable, and there was also a great team behind the theme that was really fast to answer to any questions that I could have.
At that time, I was already managing about 5 websites, and I basically had one different theme on each of those websites, as I believed you really need to use a different theme per website to give them more personality. However, it was a nightmare to manage, as fixing one site doesn’t mean there won’t be a similar problem on another site that would require a brand new solution.
Therefore, I started to use Enfold for all of my sites. It’s only in 2015 that I finally finished the switch, and now all my websites are using Enfold. This is a screenshot of another of my website, Dividend Academy, also running Enfold:
As you can see, Enfold can be used for websites in many fields, from my DIY home automation sites for hobbyists, to my website about dividend growth investing.
Enfold also has ready-to-use templates that can be used to setup a new site in minutes. For example, here is one of their most recent template for a consultant:
Just as large real estate owners that use the same refurbishment process for all their properties, I am now using Enfold for all my new websites. This is the same ‘paint’ that I apply to all my websites, and it helped me to reduce costs & problems inside my business. Now, I don’t have to loose time choosing a theme for a new site. I don’t need to train a new WordPress developer to maintain the site: the developer of my team is now already an Enfold expert. And I know that if there is any issue that I fix on one of my site, I’ll also be able to apply this fix to all the others.
Enfold might not be the best solution for you, but I really recommend trying it out, or at least considering a serious premium theme that you can find on ThemeForest. It will simplify your life as an online business owner, it will simplify the life of your team, and of course your website(s) will look really professional.
